Rank Advancements:
What are rank advancements?
In the Boy Scout program, there are seven ranks: Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life and Eagle. Each scout in Troop 87 earns their first rank, Scout, after completing a small set of requirements. After attaining Scout, each boy must then complete another set of requirements to advance to the next rank. Requirements include learning about scouting principles, first aid, camping techniques and leadership. Scouts will also have to earn merit badges once after they achieve the rank of First Class in order to advance to Star, Life, and eventually Eagle.
What do I do once I finish all the requirements for a rank?
After you have completed all the requirements for any given rank, you must schedule a Scoutmaster Conference (SC). During your SC, you will meet with the troop's Scoutmaster to discuss what you have learned and achieved. Once you pass your SC, you'll need to complete the last step: the Board of Review (BoR). You will meet with a small group of troop parents during your BoR to talk about yourself, and what you like and don't like about the troop. You will also be asked questions about what you have done to help the troop. You can schedule a SC and/or BoR online.

Merit Badges (MB's):
What are merit badges (MB's)?
MB's are badges specific to a topic, such as biking, environmental science or camping. MB progress must be documented on a Blue Card, obtainable through the Scoutmaster during a troop meeting. MB's are completed with a certified MB counselor, who will sign off the requirements you complete. Once all the requirements of a particular MB are completed, the scout must turn in his Blue Card to the troop to receive the MB at the next Court of Honor.

Planning a Scouting Event:
All Scouts are expected to actively participate in the troop. This means that every so often, you may be put in charge of a scout meeting or a scouting event (such as a camping trip). Here are some tips to get you started.
- Get an adult to help with the planning. This can be your parent, or another scout leader.
- Set up and online sign-up sheet. This is how you know who will be attending to your event.
- Do some planning. No event can be easily pulled off with zero planning. Be prepared.
- If you need help, just ask!
- Here is a checklist of things you should do before and after a scouting event.
Troop Leadership Positions:
Star, Life and Eagle Scout ranks all require scouts to take up a troop leadership position. Some positions are elected by the scouts, others are appointed. Below are the descriptions for each leadership position.
