Chaplain Aide
The Chaplain Aide works with the Troop Chaplain or the Temple Representative to determine and meet the religious needs of the Troop. He ensures that religious holidays are considered during the Troop's program planning process, and also works to promote the BSA's religious emblems program. May alternately be responsible for instituting programs within the Troop to foster and promote Scout Spirit. The Chaplain Aid:
- Makes sure religious holidays are considered during the Troop program planning process
- Works with the Temple Rep. to coordinate Troop activities with the Temple calendar
- Assists the Temple Rep. to coordinate Scout participation in, and providing service for, Temple activities such as table set ups for Keiro Kai, Mochitsuki, Obon, etc.
- Represents the Troop at Scout Sunday Services at the Temple, by coordinating the service and presenting a sermon based on Boy Scout values
- May assist the Troop Chaplain and help plan and lead appropriate religious observances at Troop activities, especially leading an appropriate grace for troop meals
- Talks with Scouts about the religious emblem program for their faith
- Sets a good example
- Enthusiastically and correctly wears the Scout uniform
- Lives by the Scout Oath and Law
- Shows Scout spirit
Qualifications: Should be familiar with, or agree to become familiar with, the BSA's religious emblems program. Should be aware of the various religious beliefs of the Scouts in the Troop and should foster respect for the beliefs of others.
Reports to: The Troop Chaplain or the current Temple Representative, and the ASPL.
Bulger
Plays the bugle (or a similar instrument) to mark key moments during the day on troop outings or during troop meetings, including Reveille, Taps, and the call to order prior to flag raising ceremonies or other times at the direction of the Scoutmaster, SPL, or the scout in charge of the outing. He may be asked to signal the scouts to gather for different activities during an outing such cook's call, mess call, or to signal an emergency gathering. This position meets the position of responsibility requirement for Star and Life ranks, only. The Bugler:
- Plays the appropriate bugle calls when requested by the Scoutmaster, SPL, or scout-in-charge of an activity or outing
- Plays Revielle and Taps during outings, knowing when it is appropriate to play them during an outing
- Plays a call to order prior to the flag ceremony at troop meetings and taps during closing ceremony, as requested by the SPL
- Maintains a call book of the required bugle, or other instrument, calls for new scouts to learn to recognize and respond appropriately to the calls
- Be familiar with and be able to teach appropriate whistle calls to use during emergency situations
- Be familiar with the history of the Bugler and his role in scouting and similar organizations
Qualifications: Prior to election, must demonstrate his ability to play the bugle, trumpet, or an alternate instrument appropriate for carrying out the duties of Bugler. If he has not already done so, he should complete the Bugling or Music merit badge during his term in office.
