Junior Assistant Scoutmaster
The Junior Assistant Scoutmaster position is a great way to utilize the Troop's former Senior Patrol Leaders, Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders, Instructors, and Troop Guides. The duties, which can include working directly with the Scoutmaster, prepare older Scouts for future roles as Assistant Scoutmasters. The Scoutmaster may assign JASMs important responsibilities, depending on their abilities and interests as well as on the needs of the Troop. A troop may have more than one Junior Assistant Scoutmaster. The JASM:
- Functions as an Assistant Scoutmaster, except where legal age and adult maturity are required
- Provides support and supervision to the other scout leaders in the troop
- Performs duties as assigned by the Scoutmaster
- Sets a good example
- Enthusiastically and correctly wears the Scout uniform
- Lives by the Scout Oath and Law
- Shows Scout spirit
Qualifications: Junior Assistant Scoutmaster is not an elected position. A scout interested in becoming a Junior Assistant Scoutmaster needs to get the approval of the Scoutmaster and the SPL, and then must be confirmed by the Troop. He must be at least 16 years of age, not yet 18, and shown outstanding leadership skills.

(A Scout under the age of 14, or who has not yet completed Leave No Trace Trainer training, may serve as an Instructor teaching Leave No Trace principles and skills. The Instructor for Leave No Trace should go through the BSA's Leave No Trace 101 course.) He should be familiar with the history of Leave No Trace and should have a thorough understanding of and a commitment to Leave No Trace. If more than one scout meets these qualifications, the Trainer will be selected by troop vote.
